Whatever the Weather
21 November 2015 to 10 April 2016
Background
An exhibition charting our obsession with the weather and its influence on our culture and creativity. Artefacts from RAMM’s collection were displayed alongside objects from the collections of the Met Office, National Trust, Arts Council Collection and Royal Meteorological Society.
Brief
The main parts of interpretation will have a poetic feel, which should also be present in the typography.
Requirements
Exhibition to incorporate a newly-commissioned contemporary art video piece which will require its own discrete area. We wish to have an interactive weather map and a moodboard area.
Approach
The exhibition will be presented across two galleries both with different outlooks. One will be stormy and gloomy, the other, more optimistic. Use weathervanes as a signage device throughout the exhibition.
Challenges
Diverse range of objects (Natural History, Fine art, ethnography) will be on display. There will be challenging subjects such as flooding, but it will be optimistic in tone.
Solutions
The gloomy first gallery had physical elements such as walls and cases arranged in an angled fashion to suggest they have been moved by flooding. The typeface Dala Floda was selected for the main parts of interpretation to make use of its swash ligatures. Each section was accompanied with a bronze illustration in the shape of a weathervane.
Outcomes
Strong, original and playful identity using weathervanes as graphic elements throughout.
Winner of Best Visual Art event at the Devon Performance Awards 2016.
