Watercolours from the Royal Collection
Sat 17 December to Sun 23 April 2017
Background
An exhibition showcasing forty-four watercolours of Queen Victoria’s remarkable visit to Paris in 1855, all commissioned by or for Queen Victoria.
Brief
Display all existing content within one gallery, with clearly defined sections.
Requirements
Use existing design elements but improve on the original display graphics.
Approach
The look and feel was adapted from the original display. A beautiful revival typeface – sympathetic to the time period – was used.
Challenges
The original exhibition was displayed across several galleries, but at RAMM it needed to fit into just one.
Solution
A large graphic of the poster image greets visitors to a densely-packed but well-paced display. Red and blue walls either end of the gallery turns the space into a giant tricolour. Bespoke flags were manufactured to give a sense of celebration. Branded bunting was hung above the works and tall, swallowtail flags recreated from the hero image completed the look. Visitors are greeted in French: “Bienvenue!” and are wished “A bientot!” on leaving.
Outcomes
Redesigned logotype. Exhibition and marketing. Branded bunting was hung around the museum and outside to attract visitors.
