Botanical illustrations from India
11 June to 11 September 2016
Background
Newly researched and conserved botanical drawings created for the East India Company. RAMM is the only non-national UK collection to hold original drawings from this group, the others being at Botanical Gardens Kew, the British Museum and the Natural History Museum.
Brief
Create an engaging display to introduce the works to a new audience.
Requirements
Map showing typical trade route. Panel explaining conservation technique.
Approach
For research, I visited the Margaret Mee exhibition at Botanical Gardens Kew (also botanical drawings). I realised that hanging a lot of similar drawings can lead to a very dry and unappealing display. I was also keen to avoid clichéd visual references to India.
Challenges
Create impact with small, similar sized works.
Solution
Use hot pink for titling to complement the dominant green colour and add energy. Tall vertical fabric banners showing details of the drawings adds drama and pulls out the beauty of the intricate drawings. Use coloured lighting gels to emphasise the gallery ceiling. Project the symbols from the logotype onto the floor using projector lights
Outcomes
Attractive display with drama and pace.
