Victorians and the Gothic
22 November 2014 to 12 April 2015
Background
Victorian artists and architects drew much of their inspiration from the Middle Ages. This exhibition includes work by some of the most celebrated artists and designers of the 19th Century including William Morris, Augustus Pugin, Edward Burne Jones and John William Waterhouse. Partnership with the University of Exeter’s Department of Literature.
Brief
Create a visually coherent narrative across two galleries with over 100 objects. Work with the in-house technical team to create mounts and frames for various objects such as stain glass windows, busts and tapestries.
Approach
Position section introductions intelligently and give them plenty of space. Transform the galleries with strong colour. Place key artefacts in prominent locations to produce interesting sightlines and to draw visitors through the space.
Challenges
A vast amount of objects to incorporate, many with strict display requirements form lenders. The biggest object (large tapestry) will need to be positioned to create the maximum effect.
Solutions
Paint the shortest walls a bold colour to break up the white wall space. Pick a modern typeface with authentic period styling to both complement and match the objects.
Open display objects presented on minimal plinths that echo the shapes and designs of the era.
Outcomes
Rich and varied exhibition with a large amount of information well paced and broken up into a distinct hierarchy.
